Taeniasis is an infection of the intestine caused by larval tapeworms. Humans can become affected with two tapeworm species: Taenia solium (pork tapeworm) and Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm). T. saginata has no significant impact on human health, but T. solium causes neurocysticercosis, the most severe type of the illness. Neurocysticercosis represents the most prevalent avoidable cause of epilepsy globally and a common cause of seizures. As reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), neurocysticercosis is responsible for 30% of all epilepsy cases in endemic countries and 3% of all epileptic cases worldwide.
